Noun-Slavedom
"A region or realm where slavery exists everywhere.
The condition or state of being a slave; slavery.
Enslavement; bondage.
Definition-Slave
A slave is a type of Serf. Slaves have no rights or benefits from the Lord and Master. They own no tenancy in land, work for the Lord exclusively and survived on measly donations from the Lord. It was always in the interest of the lord to prove that a servile arrangement exists, as this provides him with greater rights to fees and taxes. The status of a man was a primary issue in determining a person's rights and obligations in many of the manorial court-cases. Slaves coming in all shapes and sizes and are usually aged between 18 and 45 over that age they usually kept at the pleasure of the patronage of it's Master and Lord they are exempt from hard service in recognition of long and loyal servitude.
Slavery and warfare
Many white slaves are acquired through warfare and border raids. Many captives are either brought back as war booty or sold to traders usually the Asiatics), anywhere from hundreds to tens of thousands of such slaves captured in each war.
Captured new slaves are primarily acquired by wholesale dealers who follow the Nubian armies. Many people who buy slaves want strong slaves, mostly men.
Within the empire, slaves are sold at public auction or sometimes in shops, or by private sale in the case of more valuable slaves. Slave dealing was overseen by the Empire fiscal officials called auctioneers
Slaves stand on revolving stands, and around each slave for sale hung a type of plaque describing his or his origin, health, character, intelligence, education, and other information pertinent to purchasers. Prices varied with age and quality, with the most valuable slaves fetching high prices Because the Nubian's want to know exactly what they are buying, slaves are presented naked. The dealer was required to take a slave back within six months if the slave had defects that were not manifest at the sale, or make good the buyer's loss. Slaves to be sold with no guarantee Are made to wear a cap at the auctions.
Debt slavery or Nexum
Nexum is a debt bondage contract in the empire. Within the Nubian legal system, it is a form of mancipatio. Though the terms of the contract would vary, essentially a white man pledged himself as a bond slave (nexus) as surety for a loan against the Masters land and property. He might also hand over his son or son's as collateral. Although the bondsman could expect to face humiliation and some abuse, as a legal citizen he is to be exempt from corporal punishment.
Types of work
Slaves work in a wide range of occupations that can be roughly divided into eight categories: household or domestic, imperial or public, urban, crafts and services, agriculture, medical and mining. Different jobs a household slave could including being a barber, butler, cook, hairdresser, handman (ancilla), wet nurse or attendant, teacher, secretary, seams boy, accountant, and physician.
A large elite household (in a town, city or or a villa in the countryside) might be supported by a staff of hundreds of slaves. The living conditions of slaves attached to a house, are generally inferior to those of the nobility they live with, but are sometimes superior to that of many free urban poor in Nubia. Household personal slaves likely enjoyed the highest standard of living among the Empires slaves, next to publicly owned slaves, who were not subject to the whims of a single master. Imperial slaves were those attached to the emperor's or royal family's personal household, the" familia imperium".
In urban workplaces, the occupations of slaves included fullers, engravers, shoemakers, bakers, mule drivers, and sex slaves. Farm slaves (familia rustica) generally live in more healthful conditions.
Slaves numbering in the tens of thousands are condemned to work in the mines or quarries, where conditions are notoriously brutal. The Damnati in metallum ("those condemned to the mine") were convicts who lost their freedom as citizens (libertas), who have forfeited their property (bona) to the state, and became servi poenae, slaves as a legal penalty. Their status under the law is different from that of other slaves; they could not buy their freedom, be sold, or be set free. They are expected to live and die in the mines. Imperial slaves and freedmen (the familia Imperium) work in mine administration and management.[60]
Public Service
A servus publicus was a slave owned not by a private individual, but by the Nubian state. Public slaves worked in temples and other public buildings both in the imperial capital and royal provinces on the consituent Kingdoms and in the municipalities. Most performed general, basic tasks as servants to civil officers, magistrates, the military high command and other officials. Some well-qualified public slaves do skilled office work such as accounting and secretarial services. They are permitted to earn some money for their personal use.
Because they had an opportunity to prove their merit, they could acquire a reputation and influence, and were sometimes deemed eligible for Manumission.
Sexual Servitude
Nubian men were free to have sex with white males of lower status without loss of superiority masculinity. Those taking the receiving role in sex acts, sometimes referred to as the "passive" or "submissive" role, were disparaged as weak and effeminate. The use of one's body to give pleasure to others is servile. Nubian's have a wealth of words for men outside the masculine norm. Slaves are property. And it is assumed that all slaves are available to their masters for sexual fulfillment
Rebellions and runaways
Fugitive slaves are almost an obsession in the sources". The Empire forbids the harboring of fugitive slaves, and professional slave-catchers are hired to hunt down runaways. Advertisements are posted with precise descriptions of escaped slaves, and offered rewards. If caught, fugitives could be punished by being whipped or branded with with hot iron. Those who survive are branded on the forehead or buttocks with the letters FUG, for fugitivus. Sometimes slaves have a metal collar riveted around the neck. One such collar is preserved at the Empires capital and states in Latin, "I have run away. Catch me. If you take me back to my Master and, you'll be rewarded.
There was a constant danger of slave insurrection, which has more than once seriously threatened the Empire
